Wadi Shab to Sur: A Perfect 2-Day Oman Road Trip

Pair Wadi Shab’s emerald pools with Sur’s coastal calm — a compact loop from Muscat with realistic drive times and one night in the interior.

Muscat is a great base, but Oman’s magic often starts once you leave the capital. This two-day loop — Wadi Shab, then east to Sur — is one of the most rewarding short trips in the country. It fits a long weekend and works well as a first “real Oman” itinerary on Traviar.

Day 1 — Wadi Shab (morning) → interior drive → overnight

Leave Muscat before 7 a.m. to beat traffic and heat. The drive to Tiwi (Wadi Shab parking) takes roughly 90 minutes.

What to expect at Wadi Shab

  • Short boat shuttle across the water (cash helps)
  • 45–60 minute riverside walk with a few river crossings
  • Optional swim through the canyon to the waterfall cave

Pack: water shoes, dry bag, sunscreen, 2L water minimum.

Plan 4–5 hours on site including the boat, hike, and swim. On Traviar, block this as a single morning activity — not squeezed against a long afternoon drive.

Afternoon: head toward Sur

After the wadi, drive east toward Sur (about 2 hours from Wadi Shab). Stop for lunch near the coast if you can — you’ll appreciate AC after the hike.

Overnight: Sur or a camp between Quriyat and Sur depending on season and availability.

Day 2 — Sur & Ras Al Jinz → return to Muscat

Morning in Sur

Sur is quiet and walkable. Highlights:

  • Sur dhow yards (watch craftsmen at work)
  • Corniche walk along the harbour
  • Small local cafés — no rush

Allow 2–3 hours unless you’re adding a turtle experience.

Optional: Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve

If you visit in season (typically May–September for green turtles), a pre-dawn or evening tour is unforgettable. Book ahead — slots fill quickly.

Return to Muscat

The drive back is 2.5–3 hours. Leave Sur by mid-afternoon if you want to reach Muscat before dark.
