Wahiba Sands: desert camps, dune drives, and stargazing

How to pick a camp, what a one-night desert stay really looks like, and how to link Wahiba with Nizwa or Sur.

Wahiba Sands (Sharqiyah Sands) is the classic Oman desert experience — golden dunes, 4x4 transfers, and some of the clearest night skies in the region.

Choosing your camp

Options range from simple Bedouin camps to luxury tented resorts. Decide based on bathroom comfort, meal inclusion, and distance from the main entry road. One night is enough for most first-time visitors; two nights if you want dune bashing plus a camel ride and time to relax.

Sample day structure

  • 3 p.m. 4x4 handoff and dune crossing
  • Sunset on the dunes
  • Camp dinner and stargazing
  • Optional sunrise walk before departure

Mark camp check-in as accommodation in Traviar so your next day’s drive to Nizwa or Sur shows realistic departure times.

Linking routes

Common loops: Muscat → Wahiba → Sur (turtle season) → Muscat, or Muscat → Nizwa → Wahiba → back. Use the trip map to sanity-check total driving — AI Check flags days that are too packed.
